Jim Johnson, a former U.S. Treasury Department official who was the Democratic runner-up behind Gov. Phil Murphy in the 2017 gubernatorial primary, is endorsing former Small Business Administration official Michael Roth for New Jersey’s 7th congressional district.

Johnson lives in Lambertville in the 7th district, and was discussed as a possible candidate for the seat during the 2024 cycle but declined.

“Michael’s record is stellar,” Johnson said in a statement. “His vision for the way forward gives me hope. Michael speaks about the people in this district in a way that gives life to the humanity beyond statistics… When we return him to Washington, he will have the credibility to put his ideas into action and he will have the knowledge to rebuild what the Trump Administration has worked so hard to tear down.”

Roth is one of four Democrats seeking the nomination against Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield), who is running for a third term in one of the nation’s most competitive districts.
